SALT – Main case of hair loss

Recently in my practice I can see higher percentage of patients suffering from hair loss. While taking case history I realized apart from our daily routine, dietary habits and dry weather in UAE commonest cause in all cases was high intake of salt that is sodium chloride.

Soon I realized Sodium is everywhere from canned food to soups, sausages and even less obvious foods like bread and salad dressing.  The FDA recommends that individuals consume no more than 2,300 milligrams of sodium per day, and that certain groups limit intake to 1,500 milligrams per day. This certain groups are people with conditions like diabetes, hypertension or kidney problems.

As Ayurveda practitioner I started researching in my Ayurveda texts for

sodium chloride and its side effects on healthy hair. According to Ayurveda, we have 6 types of taste sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent and astringent .

Salt is lavana / salty which has quality that increases Pitta. Here you go increase in pitta is also the main cause for hair loss. In addition to this salt is not quickly excreted from body it stays in our body for long time that is why people with high sodium complains about water / fluid retention.

Ayurvedic Natural Solution

After researching a bit I found out about herb Haritaki (Terminalia chebula) yes, one the herb of triphala, the most popular formula in Ayurveda.

Haritaki contains five of the six tastes, all but salty. So it helps to reduce salt, sodium in return in your body if taken on daily basis.

Sweet, bitter, and astringent tastes pacify excess pitta; so even pitta is balanced.

It is easy to find Haritaki powder in any ayurveda pharmacy, intake of haritaki can reduce the hair loss within 3-5 months

Sweet, bitter, and astringent tastes pacify excess pitta;

If dandruff is the issue you can even apply Haritaki or Triphala as an anti dandruff mask to condition your hair.

The Modern or Ancient way?

Above is the Ayurveda perspective, now let’s see what the allopath or modern science has to say about sodium

According to studies in modern medicine. High levels of salt can be toxic to hair, as sodium deposits build around the hair follicles, preventing important nutrients responsible for hair health from entering the follicles. When hair follicles do not receive important nutrients, this can gradually lead to hair loss.

High levels of sodium in relation to potassium levels in one’s body can also lead to hair loss. Potassium is an essential mineral that facilitates electrical and cellular functions in the body; it is absolutely crucial for the proper functioning of your heart, kidneys and other organs.  Potassium is also important for hair growth; however, potassium levels are depleted through urination, which is exacerbated by high salt intake.

If your body is high in salt level and low in potassium level, it is important to increase potassium within your diet through foods such as bananas, Avocado, Spinach, whole grains or supplements. Having a balanced mix of potassium and sodium
